A police department received backlash after they named one of their police doggos after rapper Lil’ Kim. It is unclear, however, what is the new name of the police doggo.
– A police department in Bend, Oregon named one of their police dogs as Kim and has a nickname Lil’ Kim.
– Many believe that this is in reference to rapper Lil’ Kim.
– However, the departments Chief of Police clarified that…
According to reports, the dog was given the name Kim by a police department’s Chief of Police, Mike Krantz, in Bend, Oregon. Later, they have been calling the doggo Lil’ Kim as its nickname in reference to its petite size in comparison with the other police doggos with them. Krantz continued to share that they already addressed the matter internally so as not to confuse people that they are calling the police dog Lil’ Kim, but the Belgian Malinois shepherd was still referred to as such in official department statements.
Although Krantz offered this as an explanation to the public, many still protested that they change the doggo’s name. The founder of the Central Oregon Black Leaders Assembly, Riccardo Waites, said in a statement, “Why are you justifying why the dog is called Lil’ Kim, instead of accepting that it’s hurting people in the community?” through an email. Waites continued to tell Krantz that while the name may appear as a “small and inconsequential matter to some, it is not to those of us who remember how police dogs were used against peacefully protesting civil rights workers and People of Color in the 1960s and are still used as a means of crowd control and intimidation today.”
Waites and Krantz have since met face to face and Krantz already changed the dog’s name. Krantz clarified, though, that although the dog is not named after the rapper, “…it’s important to recognize that some people may assume that or believe that.” Krantz added that he met with Waites to make sure that the history of the police doggo’s name was made in good faith.
The rapper has not yet commented on this issue.
